Before we delve into the depths of cannabinoid comparison, let’s start at the beginning - what is THC?

THC is one of the main active ingredients found in the cannabis plant, alongside Cannabidiol (CBD). There are more than 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant; tetrahydrocannabinol being the main ingredient.

So, what is Delta-9 THC? First discovered in 1964, Delta-9 is a fatty substance found in the cannabis plant. It is widely known for the euphoric, psychoactive effect that it has on users.

How does it work? When ingested, the THC molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream. They then travel the body and arrive at the brain. Here, it attaches itself or binds to receptors in the brain. Delta-8 is a form of THC. In contrast to Delta-9 THC, Delta-8 is found in much smaller quantities in the cannabis plant. It’s a minor cannabinoid that isn’t directly produced by the plant.

What do we mean by that? Enzymes within the cannabis plant naturally synthesize Delta-9 THC and it is stored in the plant. Over a period of time, this THC breaks down and becomes Delta-8 THC. This is why it is found in smaller concentrations.

Although Delta-8 and Delta-9 share the same amount of atoms, they have some notable differences. The main difference between the two, on a molecular level, is the location of a critical chemical bond.

Both forms of THC have double bonds in their molecular chain; Delta-8 has that bond on the 8th carbon chain. In contrast, Delta-9 has the chemical bond on the 9th carbon chain. This is where the compounds get their names.

It might sound like a tiny difference, but it means that both forms behave in different ways, and they have different effects.

What are the differences between Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC?

As we mentioned, the make-up of the two compounds affects the way they behave in the body. For example, Delta-8 can bind to the CB1 receptor in the brain, just like Delta-9 can, but not as well. Because Delta-8 doesn’t bind as well as Delta-9, many people claim that the psychoactive effects of the compound are significantly weaker.
